Women in the episcopate? - A study guide to the Rochester
Report

'The question of whether the
episcopate in the Church of England should be open to women as well as men is
hugely important for our self-understanding as a church, for our relations with
other churches and for the way we witness in a changing society. The ‘Rochester
Report’ explored the subject thoroughly and I hope that this study guide will
help members of the diocese think it through, preferably in groups representing
a range of approaches and opinions.
The advantage of doing so at this point is that although the General Synod has
set in train the preparation of appropriate legislation it will probably be a
few years before we are asked to vote on any proposals. This provides us with
the opportunity to work through the issues in what should be a more
dispassionate way than would be possible when a decision is imminent. I commend
this study guide and the Rochester Report itself for prayerful study and
reflection and am grateful to the working party under the chairmanship of
Archdeacon Douglas McKittrick which has prepared it.'
